Inv. Dick Haumann partnered with Frank Sardino.  They were called Batman & Robin after the legendary New York City detective team because of their many spectacular arrests.

Sgt. Dick Haumann quit to become a Postal Investigator and came back.

Lt. Dick Haumann quit to work for his friend Keith Hawkins as security director for Green Hills Farm Stores.

Tom Sardino brought him back as a Deputy Chief, and he retired after the new mayor, Tom Young, replaced Tom Sardino as Chief.

For a time he was working for Amtrak running their operation on New York City's Penn Station.  The last I heard (1999) he was acting Chief in the village of Chittenango.

The guts to walk away from a secure civil service job before retirement is something few cops have the nerve to do. Dick Haumann did it twice.  His abilities allowed him the opportunity to come back.
