T. Jewell March 12, 2010 Joseph T. Jewell, former deputy chief of police,
city of Syracuse, died peacefully at home on March 12, 2010, after a long
battle with dementia. Joseph grew up on the West side of Syracuse. He served
in WWII as a medic. In 1947, he joined the Syracuse Police Department,
serving with total dedication for 34 years and achieved the rank of deputy
chief. He held positions on the motorcycle squad and special security and
was a sharpshooter and head of the bomb squad. He escorted many prior
presidents and other dignitaries as they visited the area. His role in law
enforcement was documented through many news articles and awards, and he was
known for his honest and helpful manner. After retiring from police work, he
served as a federal marshall for another 15 years and continued to enjoy
hunting, fishing, shooting and photography. In later years, he was often
seen strolling with his dog Waldo near his home on the South Side, and later
Liverpool, wearing cowboy boots, a cowboy hat and smoking a pipe. Deputy
Chief Jewell is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Joseph Jr. of La Habre,
CA, James and Janice of Binghamton, NY, and Jeffrey and Mary of Syracuse,
NY; and his two grandchildren, Adrian and Marcella. The loving and
meticulous care he received from our homecare team, Wendy and Chelsa, will
always be appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his
memory to the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, 511 South State
Street, Suite 400, Syracuse, NY 13202-2181. A memorial event will be held in
his honor on Friday, April 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at A. DEWITT MEMORIAL FUNERAL
